Why didn't you love Jane Eyre and the Lord of the Rings trilogy?

I remember Jane Eyre as being rainy and depressing, and I didn't love the Lord of the Rings books. I'm really very picky. I don't like things that are dark, or with descriptions of people that are dirty, or things that aren't real. I loved Sam, but that was it.
