Choxie

I saw some chocolates at Target in the Christmas Clearance, and since they were 75% off, decided to try them. I've been intrigued with the "sea salt caramel" since I heard about it a couple of months ago.

I don't know if I got a duddy box, or if I just had high expectations for $10 chocolate, but I was very surprised to open the box. There were 8 chocolates, and they were all much flatter than anticipated. And not shiny and smooth. And the caramel wasn't gooey.

The picture on the top was this:

And the candy inside was this:
(sorry, still working on the macro shots)

See the difference in depth? Suppose they melted? In December?

And they didn't taste spectacular either. Certainly not better than Russell Stover. Is that because they were a month old? They were dry, so I suppose that could be the problem. I sent a box to Sarah, the pastry chef and chocolatier (Is it OK if I call you that? The chocolates you gave us for Christmas were MUCH better) to get her opinion.

Has anyone else tried Choxie? Got an opinion?

So...I wasn't that impressed either. I thought the discrepancy in appearance was shocking. No other product could get away with that. I thought the flavor with all the chocolates was good but not enough to overcome the funky grainy texture of the caramel itself.
I tried making caramels for my Christmas boxes this year but they didn't turn out. I'm going to try again next year and you'll definitely be on my nice list!

I haven't tried the Choxie chocolates, (and now I probably won't,) but I did watch a room full of people try some of the sea salt caramels, and it was hilarious. No one was a big fan, other than one woman who already knew she liked them, and everyone else sort of scraped the salt off the top and gingerly ate the rest of the candy. I did not try one.

The only Choxies I've tried were the bar kind. The chili pepper one is great (if you like that sort of thing).
There's an excellent choclate shop in Wichita (Coco Dulce I think) that makes a handmade sea salt caramel chocolate and it is awesome! I like the salty/sweet combo, but then again I used to chase a brownie with potato chips for a similar effect ;)

I have never tried Choxie, and now I probably won't! I got a box of Russell Stover dark chocolates for Christmas. I just opened them and they are all beautiful and delicious still. It took this long for them to sound good to me after so many other holiday sweets and then being sick.
Yes, Coco Dulce is amazing, and we also have Cero's Chocolates. Their truffles are to die for. You MUST go there when you come to Wichita, and call me!

Oh, one more thing, if you like sweet and salty, have you ever tried original Mike and Ikes in your popcorn? That is a super treat that Brent introduced me to. YUM!
