Making crayons

I decided to treat the kids at school to new crayons this year, the old ones were getting pretty sad. Last year they started asking most days if they could bring their own crayons in.

That meant I had two big Ziploc bags full of crayon bits that I couldn't possibly throw away.

Yesterday Anna and I started making big mixed crayons out of them.
It's fun. We peeled a few crayons, cut them into smaller bits, and then put them into some heart shaped foil things I got free a few years ago. I'm going to have to find another mold that's not as girly.

We followed this tutorial initially, but after 25 minutes at 170 degrees, they weren't melted much at all.

We had to go to town then, so we let them cool back down, and then I cooked them for a bit later in the evening at 230, and then we had to go again, and then finally at 250. Eventually they melted and we took them out and cooled them. They're really pretty, but have a row of lighter wax at the top/bottom. I'm not sure if that's because of the higher heat or the heating and reheating. Hopefully next time I'll not try to squeeze it in on a busy day.

Here are a couple more super cool ideas I found when I was looking for more information:

I've found a wide range of temperatures, from 150 to 250, so let me know if you try it, and what you think works best. I'll keep you posted on what we come up with too.

Those are super cool. When I have a bag of crayons that are past their prime I'm going to try this. Are the molds heavy duty metal or are they like cookie cutters? Could you use cookie cutters with foil wrapped around the bottoms? Thanks for the post. It's good to see you doing crafty things again. :)

Yours turned out pretty! The ones I made with Isabelle a few years ago were a flop. Quite a few of them were dollar store crayons, and they turned really gross when melted and didn't melt at the same time as the Crayolas.

My molds are very flimsy, foil-like. Reynolds made them a few years ago, for individual heart shaped cupcakes, I think. I got free coupons in the mail to promote them, but I don't know if they stuck around long.

I'll bet you could use cookie cutters with foil. I'm about to try some with some other sorts of containers.

My mom made crayons growing up; and I've since made some, too. We melted them on the stove--put our like colors of crayon bits in a margarine tub or the like; then placed the tub in a pan of boiling water. We used candy molds to pour the crayons into. I also tried ice cube trays (it worked, but it kind of spoiled the trays for using for actual ice after that). I've also seen people pour the wax into empty juice boxes to make a big block crayon.

My two-cents...
